Mid-2017 Opening Possible for New GreenJackets Ballpark

New Augusta GreenJackets ballpark rendering

Construction on a new ballpark in North August, SC for the Augusta GreenJackets (Low A; Sally League) could take at least 14 months, thus eliminating a potential April 2017 opening. However, local officials are not ruling out the possibility that the GreenJackets move into the ballpark during the summer.

The ballpark will be a part of a 29.4 acre development known as Project Jackson, which has been in the works for several years. In April, Greenstone Properties—whose ownership includes Chris Schoen, an owner of the GreenJackets—closed on the purchase of the development’s land.

It was a major milestone for a project that has cleared numerous hurdles, including a challenge on its legality at the South Carolina Supreme Court. Earlier this week, a local official confirmed that the project is still a go and that North Augusta is close to completing the final step before construction begins. More from the Augusta Chronicle:

But North Augusta is close to finalizing a master development agreement, so a July Fourth opening for the baseball stadium isn’t out of the realm of possibility yet, City Administrator Todd Glover told the Augusta Rotary Club on Monday.

“We’re just waiting on one detail,” he said after his speech to the club.

Asked to respond to critics who doubt the project will ever be built, Glover replied: “I would say they are wrong.”

Project Jackson is fairly elaborate in its scope. In addition to the ballpark, the development calls for a variety of offices, residences, and businesses. From what the Chronicle reports, the final result could feature amenities that are becoming more and more familiar to developments surrounding ballparks, including apartments that overlook the field, adjacent bars and restaurants, and even a brew pub.

Once construction begins, there could be a clearer sense of when the GreenJackets will depart Lake Olmstead Stadium and make their move across the Savannah River.
