Myrtle Beach, Charleston to square off in Highway 17 Showdown

Charleston RiverDogsInteresting exhibition series on tap between the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (High A; Carolina League) and the Charleston RiverDogs (Low A; Sally League), as the teams fight for Highway 17 supremacy in the Palmetto State.

The Pelicans will travel to Charleston’s Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Wednesday, April 6, at 7:05 p.m., with Myrtle Beach returning the favor in 2017 at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

“We’re incredibly excited to partner with the RiverDogs on a series that will showcase two of the finest Minor League Baseball franchises, each with storied major league affiliates, playing in two of America’s premier family vacation destinations,” said Pelicans general manager Andy Milovich.

Separated by just 95 miles on Highway 17, Myrtle Beach and Charleston are home to two of the best vacation spots in the United States. The Grand Strand, which hosted 17.2 million visitors in 2015, has received such accolades as “Best Beaches for Families,” “Best Place to Retire” and “Golf Capital of the World,” with home to more than 100 pristine courses throughout the area. Over six million people each year visit Charleston, which Travel Channel named as an “Editor’s Pick” for food cities. Conde Nast Traveler also named Charleston as a top tourist destination in 2014 and small city in 2015.

“Much has been made of the ‘No. 1 Tourism Destination’ honor by our friends to the south and we’re anxious to take in what makes Charleston a truly great community,” Milovich said. “While public relations awards look great on a resume, we’ll put our 17 million annual visitors, two South Atlantic League Titles and three Carolina League Titles up against a ‘paper champion’ without a single Sally League trophy any day.”

Tickets for the exhibition will go on sale on Monday, February 1. Lower level tickets (box seats and lower reserved) will go for $10 each while all upper section tickets (upper reserved and general admission) will go on sale for $5. A portion of the proceeds from the exhibition will benefit the MUSC Children’s Hospital.  Tickets can be purchased by contacting the RiverDogs box office at 843-577-DOGS(3647) or online at riverdogs.com.
