Birmingham settles Regions Field overruns

Birmingham BaronsThe city of Birmingham has reached a settlement with contractors on unanticipated construction costs on Regions Field, home of the Birmingham Barons (Class AA; Southern League).

The contractors, Robins & Morton and A.G. Gaston Construction, said there was over $8 million in overruns for the $64-million facility. However, after months of negotiations, the city and the contractors reached a compromise figure of $4.1 million and agreed on a payment plan. From the Birmingham Business Journal:

One item in this week’s city council agenda calls for the transfer of $1.5 million from the Crossplex warm-up pool and that money being appropriated to the Regions Field baseball stadium.

The next item authorizes Mayor William Bell to execute and agreement among the city, The Public Athletic, Cultural & Entertainment Facilities Board, Robins & Morton and A.G. Gaston Construction whereby the city will pay PACE and the board will pay the contractors the $4.1 million owed in installments.

The first payment will be the $1.5 million from the Crossplex fund, and there will be six additional annual payments of $371,430, the agenda said.
