Every team should do this: the Syracuse Chiefs (Class AAA; International League) had folks lining up six hours before gametime for a free team tattoo giving them general-admission privileges for life.
Other teams have done this — in fact, we were at a Quad Cities River Bandits (Low Class A; Midwest League) contest when the game ended with folks seeking a team-logo tattoo were still queued up — and it’s always a winner. Basically, it’s a simple deal: a team throws in GA tickets for a certain amount of time if they agree to a team-logo tattoo.
In Syracuse, where a new front office has struggled to change the tone and tenor of the Chiefs, the tattoo promo worked. Fans started lining up at noon for the tattoo, and because of weather concerns the team decided to hand out 36 tattoo certificates, and before the game fans had already been receiving them. Shortly before 5 p.m., the team had handed out all 36 certificates available to fans who arrived early to take advantage of the promotion. No more will be issued.
The Chiefs had originally planned to have the tattoos inked in their Hank Sauer Room from 6 to 10 p.m. during Syracuse’s game against Buffalo. When early forecasts of thunderstorm put the game in doubt and fans’ travel in question, Chiefs general manager Jason Smorol decided to pass out certificates for the first three dozen fans at the gate.
