Sounds: New ballpark could double attendance

Nashville SoundsWell, that’s the whole reason why you build a new ballpark: Nashville Sounds (Class AAA; Pacific Coast League) execs expect a new Sulphur Dell ballpark to possibly double attendance upon opening.

It’s a given that the Sounds will boost attendance, which suffers because of the general condition of Greer Stadium, but doubling attendance would be quite the achievement. General manager Brad Tammen told the Nashville Kiwanis Club that he could see the team doubling attendance, which would bring total attendance to between 660,000 and 700,000. That would, of course, put the Sounds at the top of the Triple-A MiLB attendance charts: in 2013 the Columbus Clippers drew 635,613, while the Lehigh Valley IronPigs drew 613,075. The top-drawing team in the PCL was the Sacramento River Cats, with 607,329 in reported attendance.

Still, we are talking about a major market here, and aiming high (yet in a realistic fashion) is always a good thing.

The new ballpark will open in 2015 and replace Greer Stadium as home of the Sounds.
