The renovation of historic Wade Stadium this offseason continues, as a new home plate was installed into the new synthetic playing field at the home of the Duluth Huskies (summer collegiate; Northwoods League).
The new home plate was laid by Mayor Don Ness, who led the effort to fund improvements to the facility, constructed with WPA funds. The new field and playing surface is the first phase of badly needed upgrades to the ballpark, which has hosted professional, independent, college and summer-collegiate ball.
Next up on the Wade Stadium improvements: New fencing — including padding — and repair on the brick walls will begin in coming days after the field crew departs. That work on the brick walls will continue in the spring of 2015 with tuck pointing and brick replacement. Finally, a new concrete front entry will be installed in coming days.
The improvements should be ready for the 2015 Northwoods League season.
