Augusta GreenJackets sale finalized

Augusta GreenJacketsThe sale of the Augusta GreenJackets (Low Class A; Sally League) was finalized yesterday, with Agon Sports & Entertainment taking the reins from Ripken Baseball.

Agon is led by Jeff Eiseman, who will be the new president of both Agon Sports and the GreenJackets, and Chris Schoen, but the ownership group also includes other local and regional owners. The sale price was not disclosed, but we’ve previously reported the price at $7.5 million.

“We are very excited that the day has arrived, this is an exciting day for the community and the future of baseball in the region. Having an ownership group with deep local and regional ties helps cement that bond. Now the focus is on us enhancing the fan experience as well as securing a long term regional home for the team,” Eiseman said. “I have been deeply involved with the team and the community for the past seven years. I love the area; have a residence in the area as well as many dear friends here. Baseball brings the community together like no other sport. As the caretakers for this great pastime in Augusta we do not take that role lightly, we want to be an ongoing source of pride and enhance the previous efforts of making the CSRA a great place to live, work and play.”

The sale comes at a time when the team is seeking a new home to replace Lake Olmstead Stadium. A proposal to place a new ballpark in North Augusta was initially rebuffed with a county rejection of a TIF district, but efforts to fund a new ballpark were recently revived.
