Future of Greensboro’s War Memorial under debate

War Memorial Stadium, Greensboro

Greensboro officials are weighing options for the future of rapidly deteriorating War Memorial Stadium, the former home to professional baseball in that North Carolina city.

Opening in 1926, War Memorial Stadium was built for football and adapted over the years for baseball. Currently used for high-school and college baseball, the condition of the ballpark has seriously deteriorated since the Greensboro Grasshoppers (Low Class A; Sally League) departed for a new downtown ballpark. The issue for the city: how rapidly the facility is deteriorating and how to address the future of the historic ballpark.

Right now renovation is the number-one option, with the city hiring BWC Consultants to work out a proposal to use tax credits for renovation as part of a larger development plan in the area, according to the Greensboro News-Record. This isn’t a new plan — it basically was raised last April — but it does indicate the city is working to restore the facility and not just tear it down.

The ballpark served as the home for the Greensboro Patriots (1930-1934) of the Piedmont League, the Greensboro Red Sox (1941-1942) of the Piedmont League), the Greensboro Patriots of the Carolina League (1945-1957, 1968), the Greensboro Yankees (1958-1967) of the Carolina League, the Greensboro Hornets (1979) of the Western Carolinas League, the Greensboro Hornets of the South Atlantic League (1980-1993), and the Greensboro Bats (1994-2004) of the South Atlantic League. Since then it has served as home to high-school and North Carolina A&T games.
