Three firms bid on Saints construction project

New St. Paul Saints ballpark

The decision to open the design/build contract for a new St. Paul Saints (independent; American Association) ballpark yielded three bids, including a proposal from Ryan Cos., which was awarded the original contract.

Officials from the city’s Parks and Rec Department are reviewing the proposals from Ryan, Knutson Construction and PCL Construction to design and build the new downtown ballpark, slated to open in 2015. It’s a little surprising there were only three submissions: there were more than 50 reps from construction and architecture firms at a meeting to review the design guidelines, and Saints and city officials we talked with were expecting more submissions.

The ballpark project is budgeted at between $52 million and $54 million. The actual ballpark component of the project is only $38 million or so (depending on how costs are allocated); the rest has to do with site prep, brownfield mediation and other side costs.
