New for 2013: Saratoga Phillies

NECBLThe former owners of the Oneonta Outlaws (summer collegiate; PGCBL) are back in Saratoga (N.Y.) and will be fielding a team in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

This will be the third league in five years for Keith Rogers and Dan Scaring, who originally owned the Saratoga Phillies in the New York Collegiate Baseball League before moving the team to Oneonta and setting up shop in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. The pair sold the lease to Damaschke Field and other Outlaws assets to a local nonprofit, while also deciding to return home to Saratoga’s East Side Recreation Park for the 2013 season.

Though the move has been approved by the league, one key thing is missing: a lease for the ballpark. From the Saratogian:

“To be honest with you, our players missed Saratoga and missed playing in the Saratoga community. When we had the opportunity to sell our Oneonta franchise it was the only place we wanted to go,” Rogers said.

“(East Side Rec) is a lot more fan-friendly. We still plan on meeting with the superintendent, the Saratoga Recreation and the Recreation Commission about scheduling improvements for the ball field… we’re in the planning stages for all that right now.”

One thing to note: despite the use of the Phillies name, the team is not affiliated at all with the Philadelphia Phillies. We are wondering whether that will be an issue.
