New scoreboard on tap in Cedar Rapids

Cedar Rapids KernelsLots of change in Iowa, as fans of the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Low Class A; Midwest League) will be enjoying a new scoreboard at Veterans Memorial Stadium in addition to the team’s new affiliation with the Minnesota Twins.

The new scoreboard was approved by the Cedar Rapids City Council earlier this week, with Daktronics slated to do the work after submitting a low bid of $497,200. The new scoreboard will be 48 feet wide, as opposed to the existing 36-foot-wide scoreboard, first installed when the ballpark opened.

The money will come from a new capital-investment fund set up for Veterans Memorial Stadium. Besides the $1.5 million from the city, the local stadium commission will contribute $1 million and the Kernels $500,000. Money will be spent both on basic ballpark repairs — apparently there are some water-damage issues that need to be addressed — and new ballpark features, including the scoreboard.
