New CCU ballpark will open in 2014

Coastal Carolina University ballpark

A new $10.5 million ballpark at Coastal Carolina University has been delayed until 2014 after athletic-department officials run into some budgetary issues.

The plan is to build a new ballpark to replace small and aging Watson Stadium, which features only 850 seats. The new ballpark, built as part of a baseball/softball complex, would feature 2,500 seats and could be expanded to 5,000 to accommodate potential NCAA tourney games.

Site prep is done, but the playing field was left untouched, so the team can practice. The Chanticleers will play the coming season at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark, home of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (High Class A; Carolina League) while ballpark construction ensues.
