Mavs, Adelanto agree to new ballpark lease

High Desert MavericksThe High Desert Mavericks (High Class A; California League) will be in Adelanto for at least three more years after signing a new lease for Stater Brothers Stadium.

The deal, which kicks in next season, is slightly different than the team’s current lease. The team will pay less in rent after assuming the costs of field maintenance, going from $110,000 this year to $1 next year. The city will spend $225,000 in improvements (expanding the team store, renovating the suites and upgrading the team office) and reimburse team owner Main Street Baseball $25,000 toward the cost of a new scoreboard. The goal, says City Manager Jim Hart, is to keep the Mavs in the city — a departure from the city’s stance several years ago, which called for the ultimate demolition of the ballpark:

“The city is excited that they’re staying,” Hart said. “It’s a good thing to keep the Mavericks here, it’s a good thing to create a new partnership with the new owners, and it’s a good thing for the community to have the team here.”

The three-year lease also contains three one-year extensions.
