The independent Freedom Baseball League was locked out of Phoenix Municipal Stadium today because of missed rent payments — something that reportedly has also taken place in three other Arizona communities.
According to this report, the league — four teams playing out of the greater Phoenix area — missed rent payments recently in Prescott, Peoria, Phoenix and Scottsdale. The league must settle up with Phoenix before a scheduled doubleheader takes place tomorrow at Phoenix Muni, though officials say payment has been made. Payroll is also due today.
Outdoor baseball in Phoenix is a hard enough sell without an independent league forming without definable home fields and a lot of financial backing. When it gets to be 5 p.m. or so and the outdoor temp hits 111 degrees or so, the allure of irregularly scheduled baseball under a still-hot sun isn’t too alluring, which is what the independent Golden Baseball League when it made a partial-season foray into the Valley of the Sun.
