Macon seeking return of pro baseball

Ballpark DigestMacon officials once again raise the possibility of the return of affiliated baseball to the Georgia city, with a new downtown ballpark dangled as a lure.

There’s no funding plan or anything other than some city officials acknowledging that Luther Williams Field, whatever else its charm and allure, won’t be enough to bring back professional baseball. And they also say some sort of private-public partnership would be needed.

But the group has a site: next to the former Capricorn Records recording studios, now being renovated as a tourist attraction. And there’s some allure for any baseball owner: the area population is 231,576.

Macon last hosted professional baseball in the form of the Macon Music (independent; South Coast League), though we know some will argue the four-team Peach State League is worthy of notice. It’s been a decade since the Macon Braves (Low Class A; Sally League) played at Luther Williams Field before moving to Rome.
