Brockton goes summer collegiate for 2012

Brockton RoxThe Brockton Rox will play this season in the summer-collegiate Futures League, as the city signs off on a change in the lease for Campanelli Stadium.

The Rox, formerly of the independent Can-Am League, debuted on the Futures League schedule yesterday.

The issue: the number of ballgames in Brockton will be reduced from 54 to 27 games, and we’re guessing there was some sort of accompanying reduction in rent; the team had paid $125,000 in rent during its independent days. Mostly, anyway; last season the team didn’t make that figure, drawing criticism from Brockton 21st Century Economic Development Corp., the local entity that issued bonds to pay for Campanelli Stadium.

Still, despite concerns about the team’s ability to cover its rent, the development corporation went ahead Tuesday with the changes to the lease. And so the Rox are another team to make the transition from pro ball to summer-collegiate ball — a move that will shave $800,000 or so from the team’s expenses.
