Indianapolis’s Bush Stadium is on the way to becoming home to apartments and commercial space, with construction underway.
The redevelopment includes plans to turn the stadium into the 131-unit Stadium Lofts apartment complex with the shell and the historic façade of the stadium maintained in its original form. A new 132-unit apartment complex, Stadium Flats, also will be built on the property, and remaining parcels of land will be set aside for the development of up to 118,000 square feet of commercial space.
“We are excited to get started on this project which will not only preserve this historic site, but will breathe new life into this facility that many thought was a lost cause,” said John Watson of Core Redevelopment. “Stadium Lofts, in conjunction with the 16 Tech project, will make great strides in transforming this area in a creative and innovative way.”
Bush Stadium was the home of the Indianapolis Indians through 1996, when the team moved to downtown’s Victory Field. It opened in 1931 as Perry Stadium and was renamed Victory Field in 1942 to honor the American war effort. It was later renamed Bush Stadium in 1967 for Indianapolis native and MLB player Donnie Bush.
