P-Nats expand ballpark search area

Potomac NationalsThe search for a new Potomac Nationals (High Class A; Carolina League) ballpark is expanding to Loudoun County and Fairfax County, as owner Art Silber seeks a site on either I-95 or I-66.

That’s not to say the ballpark won’t be in Prince William County, where Pfitzner Stadium, the team’s current home, is located and where Silber has been talking new ballpark for years and years and years and years now. And Prince William County supervisors say they may have a ballpark plan to unveil in December or January. So Silber’s public pronouncement that he may look to other counties may be just the teeniest bit of posturing to get things rolling in Prince William County. Not that any team owner has ever postured to close a ballpark deal.

There is, potentially, a showdown with a Loudoun County team in the independent Atlantic League. But construction on a ballpark for the Loudoun Hounds has been delayed, with the goal of the team playing in 2013.

Silber has been pretty liberal in what he’s asking for from county officials: he’ll pay for a $22-$23-million ballpark if he gets land and infrastructure improvements. If a deal can be struck in the next few months, we could see construction in 2013 and a new ballpark in 2014.
