Fullerton, Flyers enter exclusive negotiating period for new ballpark

Proposed Fullerton ballpark

The Orange County Flyers (independent; Golden Baseball League) and the city of Fullerton (Cal.) have entered into an exclusive negotiating period for a new ballpark at the current Amerige Park site.

The Flyers have been playing at the Cal State-Fullerton ballpark as a secondary tenant. The deal, approved by the City Council on Jan. 4 on a 7-0 vote, gives the pair two years to work out a ballpark plan. The agreement gives the Flyers two years to work with the City of Fullerton and their Redevelopment Agency on a privately financed multiuse facility.

“We are extremely pleased to have this great opportunity given to us by the City of Fullerton,” said Managing Partner Bob Young. “We have been working closely with the City, their Redevelopment Agency, and the Parks and Recreation Department for the past 3 years to bring this dream closer to reality.”

This new facility will enable the Flyers to have a permanent home of their own with more control over parking fees, concessions, and other opportunities. The Flyers have also promised to work with the local community to allow public use of the proposed field not only in the off-season but during the season as well.

Currently the park is lightly used by youth baseball and soccer. In the past it served as a spring-training home for Pacific Coast League teams; more recently it was used by the Dallas-Fort Worth Rangers when that team was a Los Angeles Angels affiliate. (Yeah, we’re talking the early 1960s.) It opened in 1934.
