“Big A” restored for 2010 season

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim say the restoration of the iconic “Big A” tower — once a fixture in center field, now installed in the parking lot — is complete.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim say the restoration of the iconic “Big A” tower — once a fixture in left field, now installed in the Angel Stadium parking lot — is complete.

The iconic message board, which has been a fixture at the Angels’ home stadium since the ballpark’s 1966 opening, now features full color displays, enhanced effects and a brilliant red color scheme.

“We are so excited about the restoration of the Big A,” said Angels’ Chairman Dennis Kuhl, who spearheaded the revitalization project. “Together with Panasonic, our partner on this revival, we were able to retain the Big A’s nostalgic feel while moving its capabilities into the 21st Century.”

In addition to delivering updates on Angels Baseball and the club’s Community Outreach programs, the upgraded Big A will complement sponsorship packages by offering advertisers inventory that will reach untold thousands of daily commuters on the 57 freeway. Originally located behind the left field fence where it served as the stadium’s initial scoreboard, the Big A was moved to its current location alongside the 57 Freeway in 1980. The Angels will continue their longstanding tradition of recognizing each win by lighting the halo atop the Big A.

“The newly renovated Big A will enable us to celebrate Angel victories with a bright and shiny new halo that will light up the night brighter than ever before,” Kuhl said.
