Charlotte County Sports Park: A nice, mellow renovation

The only “new” facility in the Grapefruit League this spring: Charlotte County Sports Park, the newly renovated home of the Tampa Bay Rays. Longtime spring-training aficionados may be able to recognize it as the former spring home of the Texas Rangers, but the Rays, Charlotte County and Populous have done a nice job in upgrading what had been a very, very basic facility, adding suites and a wraparound concourse to the mix.

True, the new home of the Rays and the Charlotte Stone Crabs (High Class A: Florida State League) won’t set the world on fire, nor will it redefine how teams approach development at a year-round facility. But it will give the Rays a solid base for spring training, Class A ball, extended spring training and Gulf Coast League play.
